Background Check Information for USD Student Employees

If you’re a first-time student employee at USD, you must successfully complete a background check before the offer of employment is finalized.

Process for New Students Employees

  • Apply for a Federal Work-Study position. Information about available FWS positions will be posted in the Federal Work-Study Job Opportunities section during the first week of August. You're encouraged to apply for open positions prior to the beginning of the school year.
  • Authorize the Student Employment Center to initiate a background check on your behalf after you have received an offer of employment. This can be done through the FWS Acknowledgement & Background Requirement, or through the FWS/CWO Background Check Acknowledgement and Authorization Form. You’ll receive an email directing you to the online portal maintained by USD's background screening vendor, Truescreen, Inc.
  • Create your secure account, sign in and follow the online instructions to authorize your background check. You may apply for positions, but may not begin working before completion of your background check and new employee forms.

Any questions regarding the background check should be directed to the USD Office of Human Resources at (619) 260-4594 and hr@sandiego.edu. There is no charge for the student for the background check.

Federal law requires that you complete Form I-9 and present the required original, unexpired document(s) in person for visual inspection on or before your first day of work. View the list of acceptable I-9 documents.

In addition, Federal Work-Study student employees will be required to review the Safety Guide for Part-Time and Temporary Employees, provided by the Department of Environmental Health & Safety. You must complete and submit the Quiz and Evacuation Assembly Area pages to the Student Employment Center.
